Sharepoint was mentioned a lot more often at the conference than I would have expected. Alfresco recognise Sharepoint as their big competition, although during the second keynote John Newton took a slightly more progressive stance, stating that in subsequent versions of Alfresco 3.5+ a lot more engineering effort will be spent making sure that Alfresco can play nicely alongside Sharepoint.
I had the chance to ask John Newton about migrating from Sharepoint to Alfresco, and what support if any was available. He, and David Caruana, did say that any migration will be non-trivial.
I did get to speak to an engineer building a rich client interface on top of popular CMS, essentially giving a uniform user experience across different content management systems. He said that although Sharepoint 2010 was implementing some of the CMIS, it was doing what Microsoft always does and implementing the bits they want to, he did not expect Microsoft to back port their CMIS implementation to Sharepoint 2007.
